President Ron Liebowitz was the master of ceremonies, reading citations for the award winners and presenting each with a framed certificate. Also on hand for this year’s event was Rudolf K. Haerle Jr., professor emeritus of sociology, who endowed the awards as a way to recognize the many members of the Middlebury College staff who contribute to the vitality of the College community and support the College’s academic mission.

The award recipients for 2011 were selected by the 2010 award winners from nominations submitted by members of the faculty and staff, based on employees’ contributions to the College community, and their leadership, stewardship, and community service during their years at Middlebury.

This year’s Staff Recognition Award winners:

  • Harold “Butch” Atkins, ice rink co-manager in Athletics, who has worked at Middlebury for more than 30 years, first at Nelson and now at Kenyon Arena. He is known for the care and precision he brings to the job of maintaining what is recognized as one of the best college rinks in the country, and for his willingness to go the extra mile for student skaters.
  • Eric R. Leno, technical leader-plumbing, in Facilities Services, who has been at the College for 17 years. He was honored for the leadership and mechanical skills he brings to his job at Middlebury, and his dedication to community service, as a volunteer firefighter, a leader in the Whiting schools, and a fundraiser for community organizations.
  • Tiffany Sargent, director, Alliance for Civic Engagement, a member of the Middlebury Class of 1979 who joined the staff in 1985. She was honored for building community service and service learning programs at Middlebury that have become models for volunteerism at colleges around the country, and for being a personal role model for generations of students.
  • Nina Stowe, counter worker barista, in Dining Services, who has been a member of the staff for more than 30 years. Working first in the Crest Room, and then for more than a decade as an original barista and bartender in the Juice Bar, she has always made others feel welcome at Middlebury, and was honored for three decades of dedication and friendship.
