We would like to invite you to the Library.  Before classes begin on the 31st, we are here to help you.

Things to do early:

• Attend a library tour: stop by on Tuesday or Thursday afternoon at 3:30 for a general tour.
• Set up your library account: come to the Front Desk with your student ID card and the library form from   your registration packet and we will set up your account.
• Sign up for a research workshop: come to the Reference Desk and sign up for a research workshop.  Beginning in September, we will offer workshops on how to use our online research tools.

CFL light bulbs use 75% less energy than regular incandescent bulbs, last up to 10 times longer, save 2,000 times their weight in greenhouse gases, and must be disposed of properly. Now you no longer need to worry about where to dispose of these “GREEN” bulbs: just look for BLUE.

Blue buckets with white lids have been placed in 5 areas on campus: the 1st floor of the library, Samson Reading Room, the GSIPS desk and FGSIB main desk, and in Office Services. Just put your used CFLs in these containers and you can be assured that they will be disposed of properly.

Also, don’t forget that you can recycle your dead batteries at several locations on campus including those mentioned above. To see a listing of all battery recycling locations go here.

Commercial Atlas and Marketing Guide maps states and counties in the United States with business data and population trends.  You’ll find it in our Reference Collection under G1019.R22.

The new edition of the UN’s International Trade Statistics Yearbook has arrived.  It will give you trade statistics both by country and by commodity.  It’s in our Business Reference Collection under HF1016.I66.

Handbook of Industry Profiles from Hoover’s Business Press (BUSINESS REFERENCE HD2328.H363) looks at major industries in the U.S.with current trends and rankings of major companies.

For a good exporting how-to guide, look at Export Sales & Marketing Manual: the Bible of Exporting in the Business Reference Collection under HF1416.5.J63.

Many of our databases have citation tools that can help. For example, when you are using Proquest, you can select articles and save them to a folder. When you click on cite, you can select from APA, Chicago, or MLA citation styles. (Proquest Citation Help Guide) PAIS International and Linguistics & Language Behavior Abstracts have similar features. If you use these citation tools, make sure to thoroughly doublecheck the references for accuracy.

We keep copies of all of the major citation style manuals – MLA (Modern Language Association), APA (American Psychological Assocation), Chicago, Turabian, The Bluebook (for legal writing), and Keys for Writers – at the front desk.

Our library has a good collection of books about international cinema. If you are a film enthusiast, you’ll find these titles as well as others in our collection:

The front lobby and reference room are always busy. People come in to use computers to check their email and print papers, make copies, check out books at the front desk, or ask questions at the reference desk. It’s easy to forget that there are also students trying to study at the work tables in the reference room. We ask people to keep conversations at a low level in this downstairs area and be aware of fellow students who are trying to get work done.

The Fletcher Jones rooms behind the main reference room are meant to be quiet areas. The second floor is also a quiet area. Please help us to maintain quiet in these areas so that people can study. If you can turn your cellphone to vibrate while you are in the library, your fellow students will appreciate it!
