Check out the different groups at Midd working towards divestment

Divestment is the process of selling the stocks of one or more companies as an ethical objection to their practices.  Divestment is most often used when more traditional means of stopping unethical practices are ineffective.  Perhaps the most successful and well-known use of divestment was against companies involved in maintaining the apartheid system in South Africa.

Currently there are three groups on campus working for divestment from weapons manufacturers, extractors of fossil fuels, and other companies engaging in ethically questionable practices.

Divest for our Future is a group of Middlebury College students dedicated to bringing our endowment management practices in line with our commitment to sustainability.

Socially Responsible Investment Club (SRI)

SRI works to promote transparency and responsibility in the college’s investment practices.  The club has two main objectives:

  1. To work directly with the Board of Trustees and provide recommendations on how to incorporate more socially responsible investment practices into the management of our endowment, and
  2. To organize educational events and creative actions on campus to raise awareness about the lack of transparency in our endowment and how we can practice more socially responsible investment.
