LIS Website

November 19th, 2009 by Elin Waagen

Thanks for your time yesterday at the all-LIS staff meeting. I know that your time is an extremely valuable resource , and I appreciate that you took time away from other pressing work to learn a little bit about what the web team is doing.
I have listed below the link to the Information Architecture site – I hope you’ll take a closer look.
LIS Website
It is a work in progress and we welcome your thoughts and ideas. You best know who your users are – and your feedback will help build a fabulous place for our users to discover LIS and all the resources and services we provide. Many thanks to those of you who filled out comment cards and asked questions at the meeting. We will take your comments and questions to heart and carefully evaluate them as we further develop and test the usability of the site.

We have some very exciting web tools and platforms to work with in developing the site. We hope that the intersection of multiple platforms on the LIS web site will give our users the best possible experience in navigating and accessing our services and resources – and also give LIS a chance to feature the great work we do.
Please be in touch. We can reached by blog, phone, email, and also in person. :-)
Elin, on behalf of the web team Ian, Barbara, Carrie, Liz, Jim, Jess and Doreen

Staff Development on a Shoestring Conference

October 13th, 2009 by Elin Waagen

Bryan Carson and I recently presented our Fall ‘08 Tasty Tech Tidbits series at the Dartmouth College 2009 October Conference
We used a new web presentation tool called Prezi (thanks Joe A!) to deliver our talk. Our presentation was one of several for the 1-day conference – and it was nice to see the friendly faces of Brenda, Terry, Joy and Karen (spouse of Mike) Lynch in the audience.  All presentations are now posted on the Dartmouth Conference site.  Check it out – there are some interesting ideas – including using Jing to develop tutorials and a learning 2.0 program using the 23 Things concept.

Based on this info, the team will create an IA modeled after what White Whale has created for other sections of the College site.

End of paging service for on-campus borrowers

September 29th, 2009 by Elin Waagen

bookshelf
As of October 1, you’ll notice that the “place request” button in MidCat no longer displays for materials with an “available” status. Due to decreased staffing resources, Circulation Services will no longer be able to retrieve requested materials from library shelves for on-campus borrowers.
While it was a valued service for our on-campus borrowers, a large amount of staff time was used to fill the many requests, time that must now be redirected towards core borrowing services. Please continue to alert the Circulation desks to materials that you are unable to locate – we are still here to help!

Presenting the new LIS Blog

September 28th, 2009 by Elin Waagen

The LIS Web Team is pleased to announce the unified LIS blog, a new and effective way to communicate with both our colleagues in LIS and with our community of users.
As part of the LIS web site make-over, the Web Team – with the support of our AD’s and our team sponsor – recommended that our many LIS blogs be combined into one. LIS website feedback this summer indicated that staff wanted it to be easier to find relevant work updates, and we think that having a unified LIS blog will help meet this need. (more…)

Thesis Carrel Monday!

September 14th, 2009 by Elin Waagen

Submitted by Elin Waagen

 Carrel Monday 011

Senior thesis carrel sign-up started today – Monday, September 14. The first senior to be assigned a carrel arrived at the Main Library at 4 am; the 64th person arrived at 7 am for the 7:30 am opening of the library. By 10 am, 130 (out of 202) carrels had been assigned to the early-birds. Maura and Steve organized the event – with Morgan, Joanne, Rich, and Cassidy providing on-site support – ensuring another successful and orderly Carrel Monday – many thanks! I dream of the day that this process can be automated – much in the same way that we reserve our own airline seats :-)
Thesis carrels at the Main Library can be reserved by seniors who are enrolled in a 500-, 600-, or 700-level thesis or independent project – and thesis carrels are first-come, first-served.
