Preview of Next Version of Shadowbox Theme

I attended part of the LIS website team meeting today and gave a presentation of the ShadowBox theme and some of the new features that will be available in the next version including updates to author pages, more custom header options and most importantly, higher contrast text in comment fields.  I also gave a preview of some new ShadowBox variations based on the new college website design.  Below is a screencast from that meeting:

The LIS Web Team is pleased to announce the unified LIS blog, a new and effective way to communicate with both our colleagues in LIS and with our community of users.
As part of the LIS web site make-over, the Web Team – with the support of our AD’s and our team sponsor – recommended that our many LIS blogs be combined into one. LIS website feedback this summer indicated that staff wanted it to be easier to find relevant work updates, and we think that having a unified LIS blog will help meet this need. (more…)

LIS Website Team – Recommendations

The web team met recently with the LIS Area Directors and our team sponsor, Jeff Rehbach to present our recommendations for the new LIS web presence.
The recommendations incorporated many hours of research and discussion by team members – in meetings and on the team blog and wiki. The recommendations were informed by user patterns, surveys and statistics, feedback from our LIS colleagues and the recommendations from White Whale. We received the enthusiastic support of the AD’s to move ahead with our recommendations. Thank you Jeff and the AD’s! :-)

In addition, the team has identified primary contacts for the major content areas of the LIS web site and we are currently working with primary contacts to develop the major content areas of the LIS website. Curricular Technology Team Progress Report

Part of the re-organization of LIS was the introduction of “teams.”  Teams consist of individuals from different areas within LIS who are brought together to take on a particular project or initiative or area of activity not covered by a single functional area. Last June, LIS introduced three teams, one focused on the LIS website, another on digitization and another on curricular technology.

The Curricular Technology team has been meeting once a week since its formation. The team spent a fair amount of time just figuring out its mission, “to research, evaluate and recommend technologies for teaching and learning” and to come up with some sort of vision, an elevator pitch if you will.  Once these were in place we posted them to our blog and have been documenting our work ever since.

Currently, we have a lot of projects we are working on simultaneously.  Many of these are focused on gathering information about curricular technology needs at Middlebury.  We’ve already began to document what we think we know about technology needs, what we think we need to verify and what we really don’t know. We have also been compiling a “matrix” of features we think are important for technologies that support teaching, learning and research and have been analyzing how technology is currently being used in the curriculum.

What we really need to do now is talk to people, many different people, faculty, staff, students, administrators and find out what the community wants and thinks it needs in the area of educational technology. In doing so, we may need to educate people about what is possible with current technologies and what may be possible with emerging technologies.  It is likely we’ll follow the lead of the web redo project.  We hope to publish a survey soon that will begin to ask some basic questions.  We likely follow up with invitations to join focus groups.

Fire Extinguisher Training

Your LIS Emergency Preparedness Committee encourages you to take a few minutes out of your busy day and take one of these training sessions.
Knowing how to put a small fire out is critical in fire loss prevention and in Life Safety.  On Wednesday, July 22d
we will hold our annual fire extinguisher training for all College employees.  Fires can occur any time and knowing
how to use a fire extinguisher can mean the difference of saving a life or a home.  Please join us somewhere around McCullough (depending on construction) for a short presentation and hands on practice in putting a fire out.
 
Times:   9:00 am, 9:30 am, 10:00 am, 10:30 am, 12:00 pm, 12:30 pm, 1:00 pm, 1:30 pm
 
Each session should run about 20 minutes.  Rain date will be July 29th, same times and location.  Just show up, no reservations needed.

LIS Website Team Blog

I tweeted a bit earlier about how I’m now a member of the LIS Website Team. We’re still in the very early stages of this project, but we’ll be firming up our vision and charge in a meeting later today. The concept of teams is also the topic of the next LIS Staff Meeting in July. I have to say, as someone who is typically very cynical about these types of activities, I’m actually feeling good about how this project will work out and hope the Team model is one we repeat in future LIS projects.

You can follow all of our team’s updates through our team blog and keep informed of our notes and documentation through the team wiki page. We’ve also enabled email subscription to the blog, for those who would prefer to receive updates using that rather than RSS.

June 10th was the opening day of “Exh!bited”, the LIS staff arts and crafts exhibit.

Special thanks to all the LIS artisans for their truly beautiful contributions. This was a great opportunity to showcase our special talents and interests and bring the community together – and also surprise and delight users and visitors.

 

The opening reception was graced with beautiful live music, courtesy of Dan Frostman.

 

Early arrivals enjoyed the only edible craft piece - chocolate dipped strawberries.

New Wireless Access Points

We have just completed installing Wireless Access Points to provide full coverage throughout Coffrin and Stewart dorms, and have installed an extensive new network infrastructure (wired, and wireless) throughout the newly-renovated Proctor to support the new expanded College Book Store.
Good wireless signal is now available in about 90% of campus building interior spaces, as shown on the accompanying map.

Getting to Know Drupal

drupal-logo1You’ve probably heard Drupal mentioned in discussions about our new website, but you might not know what Drupal actually is. Drupal is a web-based Content Management System, similar to the software that our current website runs on, but also different in many ways. In this session, Ian McBride will discuss the things that makes Drupal unique, why we chose Drupal as a platform for our new site, and look at some examples of the ways we can extend Drupal to improve our website.  We’ll spend some time looking at an extension developed by Amherst College, the only other school running its entire web presence on Drupal, named Monster Menus which we’ll be using as part of the core functionality of our site.

This session requires no technical knowledge of our website, content management systems, or programming, but is a great opportunity for you to ask questions on those topics.

In coordination with the Gus Jordan, Dean of the College, two students, Mariella Saavedra and Ann Selvadurai, working as volunteers for a nationwide group promoting wellness called Active Minds http://www.activeminds.org/ sponsored stress breaks with massage therapists in the Harman Periodicals Reading Area during exams  this week. The two local professional massage therapists were kept quite busy!

Video Hosting Services Expand

Announcing a new video hosting service, MIDDMedia. This service allows for the streaming and downloading of mp4 and flv video, and mp3 audio files for people with Middlebury and Monterey accounts.

In addition, we have integrated this service with our web platforms- the college CMS, Segue, WordPress and Mediawiki. Log into your site, blog or wiki and manage your media, allowing you to add the media to a page.

Is there ONE place that I can go to to see videos created by people at Middlebury? In answer to this question, we have been working with Communications, and are now beta-launching MIDDTube, a place where we can pull together video from many places, whether the video is hosted by MIDDMedia, YouTube, or any other service.

Be on the lookout for White Whale!

White Whale Web Services will be coming to campus on April 26th, meeting with faculty, students and staff from all areas of the college.  Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th will be full days, with meetings and activities from 8:30am until 9pm.  Wednesday, the 29th, there will be a couple short wrap up sessions before they fly back home to Oakland, CA.

During this visit, they will be meeting with faculty represntatives from Film and Multimedia Culture, Economics and Chemistry.  Students will be able to share their thoughts as White Whale sets up camp during dinner at Atwater Dining Hall on Monday, and Ross Dining on Tuesday.  Meetings have been scheduled at McCardell Bicentennial Hall, Chip Kenyon ‘85 Arena, and various places in between.

If you miss your chance to spot White Whale, fear not!  They will be returning to campus at a later date, more information to follow.
