Come listen to Dr. Amy Trubek, assistant professor in the Nutrition Food Sciences department        at the University of Vermont as she explores the role of Food Studies in an undergraduate degree and the range of Food Studies programs popping up across the country. Dr. Trubek’s knowledge will help Middlebury students and faculty better understand how a Food Studies program would fit into Middlebury’s unique liberal arts curriculum.

Gregg Humphrey’s EDST0420 students will give presentations on Education for Sustainability. Projects have focused on Middlebury and the surrounding towns with college students creating projects that address sustainability needs here on campus as well as in local schools and organizations.  Refreshments will be available!  Come for some or all.

This fellowship is a staff position through August 2014 at Environmental affairs department, Middlebury college . Familiarity with current student sustainability initiatives and student leadership strongly preferred. Candidates who are Middlebury graduates preferred.

Job description

Thirty percent of the Sustainability Communications & Outreach Coordinator’s job is designing and implementing culture and behavior change programs with the Director of Sustainability that will help members of the Middlebury College community to engage more effectively in practices of sustainability. About 30% is communicating Middlebury’s sustainability initiatives and the success stories of individuals and groups to internal and external audiences through writing, speaking, video, and managing the Sustainability website and Franklin Environmental Center at Hillcrest Facebook page. An additional 15% is compiling data and producing reports for assessments such as the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS). Paid Market Development Internship at Green Mountain Flour in Windsor, VT

Green Mountain Flour seeks to secure more wholesale accounts, to more effectively get its story out to consumers, and to find and focus on the more profitable aspects of working with local grains. As an intern, you will follow the process from sourcing grains to milling/baking and then arriving at farmer’s markets where they make pizza to order in our mobile pizza oven as well as sell flour, artisianal breads and homemade sodas. You will have access to the internal workings of the company to seek out revenue generating avenues, and exploring partnerships with other organizations and businesses. 1. Hunger Action Intern at the Presbytery of Philadelphia

Shelburne Farms is a nonprofit environmental education center, 1,400-acre working farm, and National Historic Landmark. Our mission is to cultivate a conservation ethic for a sustainable future.

The Food Systems Internship will provide hands-on opportunities to experience diverse aspects of food production and food system education from farm to table.

The intern will participate in the breadth of Farm to School education activities including the Summer Institute with Vermont FEED (Food Education Every Day), a National Farm to Cafeteria conference in Burlington, as well as a diversity of summer youth programs.

The intern will also help with research related to food system planning and development. Additional activities also include hands-on experience in organic gardening, dairy operations, cheese making and farm-based education programs.

Mr. Parker is the Director of the ACLU National Office’s Racial Justice Program (RJP). Concentrating on issues of  the school-to-prison pipeline which funnels children of color from the educational system into the criminal justice system, racial profiling, affirmative action, indigent representation and felon enfranchisement and predatory lending, the RJP seeks to remove barriers to equal opportunity for communities of color through litigation, public education, community organizing and legislation.

Prior to joining the ACLU, he was the Chief of the Civil Rights Bureau of the Office of  the New York State Attorney. Mr. Parker also worked for fourteen years at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund litigating and supervising the litigation of scores of cases involving elementary and secondary education, affirmative action in higher education and equal educational opportunity. Other positions included work at the employment firm of Vladeck, Waldman, Elias and Engelhardt and the New York Legal Aid Society, Criminal Defense Division in Brooklyn, New York. He has published a book and numerous chapters and articles on a range of civil rights issues including housing discrimination, educational equity, affirmative action and testing.

Mr. Parker lectures extensively on civil rights issues and is an adjunct professor at New York Law School. He is a graduate of Middlebury College and Harvard Law School.
