(So) Over the Rainbow Schedule

Categories: Uncategorized

Today marks the start of our week-long event series (So) Over the Rainbow, which aims to examine various coinciding and conflicting narratives of identity surrounding the central question Are We Over the Rainbow? How central is the notion of “coming out” to the lived experiences of the Middlebury community? Are our unstable and intersecting identities pushing us to a point beyond what the mainstream LGBT movement offers? Is all of this gibberish? (If so, we recommend attending our terminology workshop this coming Sunday!) Would you just like some opportunities for crazy, queer fun?!

Thursday, October 21st
Verbal Onslaught / Middlebury Moth
9 P.M.

Theme: “Under the Rainbow: Stories of Subversion”
In this explosion of spoken word and story-telling, anyone can take hold of the mic and the crowd and spin a tale of subversive action—a “coming out” story, a slam poem celebrating the joys of coalition politics, or anything in between or outside of societal norms. This is an open mic event; all attending are welcome to simply listen or to perform themselves on the spot!

Friday, October 22nd

11 P.M. to 2 A.M.
Coltrane Lounge (centered amongst Adirondack Circle, Ross, and Pearsons)

Saturday, October 23rd
MOQA & Alumni Brunch
9:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
Coltrane Lounge

Taking advantage of the happy coincidence that (So) Over the Rainbow and Homecoming Weekend overlap, we will be having an informal brunch with visiting alumni, offering bagels, coffee, fruit, and donuts. And by “informal,” we mean, “Drop in whenever you feel like it and leave whenever you’d like!” :D

Sunday, October 24th
Queer Words: Terminology Workshop
8 P.M.
Chellis House

If you’ve ever been confused during a MOQA meeting when terms and phrases like “cisgender,” “ableist,” and “check yo’ privilege” are passed around like dinner rolls, this is finally your chance to be enlightened. And if you’ve never been to one of our Sunday night meetings before, this is the perfect time to start!

Monday, October 25th
Screening Bodies
8 P.M.
Axinn 103

To raise awareness of bodies that fall outside a stable male/female binary, we will be showing the documentaries Black and White (12 min.) and Boy I Am (70 min.)—focusing on an intersex New Zealander and three trans men from NYC, respectively—followed by a short discussion about the ways in which we police sex and gender and how this affects us all.

Tuesday, October 26th
Queering the Color Line
4:30 P.M.
Axinn 219

The first of a series of discussions led by Tony Hu
ỳnh about the intersections of queerness and race; in keeping with (So) Over the Rainbow, this first discussion will focus on students’ personal accounts of how race shapes the construction of queer identities and affects the “coming out” narrative.

Q Night
8:15 P.M.
go/qnight or e-mail moqa@midd for location

A safe, confidential space for those questioning their sexuality or gender identity who just want a place to talk. Light refreshments provided!

Wednesday, October 27th
Meeting: Creating Support Resources
5:00 P.M.
Axinn 229

A meeting of administrators, faculty, staff, and students, co-sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the College, dedicated to exploring concrete resources we as a community can create for Middlebury students who are questioning or closeted about their sexuality or gender identity.
