Gift from Class of 2007 supports environmental efforts at College: MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The members of the Middlebury College Class of 2007, who graduated on Sunday, May 27, have decided to call their senior class gift the Green Fund. Money from the Green Fund will support the College’s environmental projects, including sustainable campus initiatives, such as energy efficiency and alternative energy measures that will move the College closer to its goal of carbon neutrality.

Bill Clinton tells Class of 2007 to remember importance of community: “Former President Bill Clinton reminded the Middlebury College Class of 2007 about the importance of community in his commencement address on Sunday, May 27. Clinton, who received an honorary doctorate of humane letters, spoke to the more than 600 graduates and an audience of thousands that filled the quad in front of Voter and Munroe Halls.”

Burlington Free Press: Saving Snakes with Middlebury’s Jim Andrews: WEST HAVEN — Jim Andrews gathered his class of a dozen Vermont highway workers at the edge of a reptile-rich hayfield Wednesday and delivered his one-minute lesson in how to catch a snake: “Grab first, think later,” the Middlebury College snake researcher said.His audience laughed nervously. They had come to learn about wildlife habitat and to better understand that the way Vermont builds and maintains its roads can mean life or death for salamanders and skinks, snakes and snapping turtles.

From WCAX: Middlebury prepares for commencement, and Clinton: “Grounds crews at Middlebury College are taking their final measurements, preparing for the tents and chairs that will house the largest-ever crowd expected for a Middlebury graduation. Secretary of the College John Emerson says, ‘I would say 2,500 more people than we’ve accommodated at past commencements.’
“That could mean up to 7,500 people total. They’re coming to see their family and friends graduate from the liberal arts college. They will also see former president Bill Clinton, who’s delivering the commencement address.”
Professor Jay Parini on the model graduation speaker: “I tend to cry at weddings and graduations, though rarely at funerals. There is something so final about funerals that emptiness itself seems the only place to occupy. Weddings and graduations, on the other hand, mark beginnings, and usually hopeful ones; they move me powerfully. I like to see young people (and older ones, too) take a step forward, putting behind them a certain discrete period in their lives, moving with the world all before them.”

Women’s Lacrosse Drops NCAA Semi To Salisbury: “Middlebury saw its season come to an end with a hard-fought 8-7 loss to Salisbury in an NCAA semifinal contest played at William Smith College. The Panthers were making their 14th consecutive trip to the semifinals and end their season at 16-2.”
Former President Clinton to deliver Middlebury College commencement address May 27: “Former President of the United States Bill Clinton will deliver the commencement address at the Middlebury College graduation ceremony on May 27. President Clinton will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Robert De Cormier, Janet Hanson, James Gustave Speth, Marc A. and Dana Lim vanderHeyden, and Dr. Huda Y. Zoghbi will receive honorary degrees as well.”

Men’s Tennis Ends Season With A Win: “The men’s tennis team ended its season on a good note with a 5-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus (29-9) in the NCAA consolation match. The Panthers finish their season with an impressive 22-2 record, tying the school record for wins.”
Applying to College Workshop at Middlebury on June 1: “The annual ‘Applying to College’ workshop, sponsored by the Admissions Office, has been scheduled for Friday, June 1, of Reunion Weekend at Bicentennial Hall. High school age children of Middlebury alumni, faculty and staff as well as students from Vermont high schools are invited. “
Women’s lacrosse team earns trip to NCAA final four: “Middlebury has advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the 14th consecutive year after an 11-10 win over The College of New Jersey on Kohn Field. Claire Edelen scored the winning goal with 12 seconds left in the game. The win snaps the Lions streak of 23 consecutive trips to the semifinals, each year the tournament has existed. “
Tenure granted to professors in mathematics and Chinese departments: “Two members of the Middlebury College faculty have been promoted from assistant professor to the rank of associate professor without limit of tenure: Frank J. Swenton from the department of mathematics and Wei He Xu from the Chinese department.”
Middlebury College commits to becoming carbon neutral by 2016: “Middlebury College President Ronald D. Liebowitz announced on Saturday, May 5, that the Middlebury College board of trustees has approved a plan to become a carbon neutral institution by 2016. His announcement followed a meeting of the trustees this weekend where they discussed a written proposal from the Middlebury College student organization MiddShift, as well as supporting recommendations from senior administrators.”
Men’s and women’s NESCAC tournament games will be webcast live: “You can watch all the NESCAC lacrosse tournament games this weekend — the women’s games in Middlebury and the men’s games at Tufts, live over the internet. Middlebury’s women’s team takes on Williams at noon Saturday in the semifinals, and the men face Tufts on Saturday, also at noon. The championship games take place on Sunday.”

Men’s and women’s tennis to play in NCAA regionals; women’s golf makes first NCAA tourney: “The Middlebury men’s tennis team will host an NCAA Regional on campus for the sixth consecutive year. The Panthers will host a five-team regional, beginning on Friday, May 4th.
“The Panther women’s tennis team will make its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament when they take part in a regional this weekend at Bowdoin. Dates and match-ups will be announced on Tuesday.
“The Middlebury women’s golf team will make its first appearance in the NCAA Championships after an impressive season. The Panthers will take part in the four-round event, beginning on Tuesday, May 8.”
