Burlington Free Press: Saving Snakes with Middlebury’s Jim Andrews: WEST HAVEN — Jim Andrews gathered his class of a dozen Vermont highway workers at the edge of a reptile-rich hayfield Wednesday and delivered his one-minute lesson in how to catch a snake: “Grab first, think later,” the Middlebury College snake researcher said. His audience laughed nervously. They had come to learn about wildlife habitat and to better understand that the way Vermont builds and maintains its roads can mean life or death for salamanders and skinks, snakes and snapping turtles.
