The Middlebury College Rugby Club was created in 1972 with a constitution for the club first written in 1977. The club has developed immensely over the years and since the turn of the century the club has experienced incredible success on the field. I was a member of the 1972 Middlebury team and have a hazy memory of our win that spring over St. Michael’s ( the party after the game was a classic right out of “Animal House”). I played a season with the Aspen Gentleman in 1969 and so was called upon to help develop and coach the pack. The real driving force behind organizing the 1972 team was Shamus _______. I wish I remebered his last name, he deserve the credit as the Founder. Someone took several team photo’s before the game we were scheduled to play against the Warren Rugby Club but they never showed up. Does anyone have any photos or information from our spring of 1972 team…it was a real rag tag and scrappy group but we did wear a common jersey. The College was not that supportive but we slogged on and we were allowed a field for practice play.
I went on to play rugby for another twenty years for Gentleman of Aspen, the Denver Highlanders, Palmerston RFC (Dublin, Ireland), the Hilton Head Island RC, and finally for the San Francisco Rugby Club where i finished my career in 1989 as an Old Boy.
Tom,
Shamus McKeon (sp) was his name …
I played four year at Midd (’76-’80) was scrum-half and along with Shamus and Mike Lyons we rekindled the club in ‘76
